Project Precious Haiti is a Canadian Registered Charity founded and administered in Canada by Jim and Marg Brickman. Jim and Marg started travelling to Haiti in 2004 while serving on the Mission Committee at St. Joseph’s Church in Stratford, Ontario. Their first few years were spent working at Hopital Bon Samaritain (HBS), with Jim doing construction work and Marg working with the children in the orphanage, Kai Mira. In 2009, Marg saw a small crowd of people huddled around something on the ground. She went over to find an abandoned baby girl on the sidewalk. The child suffered from hydrocephalus, a condition in which the fluid does not drain from the brain, causing the head to swell. Marg named her Precious, as she believes all children are precious gifts from God. Upon returning to Canada, a couple from their church heard about Precious, did some investigating, and found out about a surgery team from Florida that does work like this in Haiti. Jim and Marg immediately began to fundraise money and make plans to return to Haiti to facilitate the operation for Precious. Their efforts were tragically cut short as she passed away before the arrangements could be made. They were deeply saddened and questioned why something like this would happen. They prayed to God, asking him for direction.
While traveling through various Haitian communities, Jim and Marg came to realize what an issue it was for children to attend school. In Haiti, the state has schools, but they are underfunded and under-supplied. To get a proper education for their children, parents must pay for them to go to a church-run or private school. After receiving many pleas for help from many people, Jim and Marg realized why Precious was placed in their lives. They started Project Precious Haiti in 2011, through St. Joseph’s Catholic Church. In 2020, Project Precious Haiti became a Canadian Not-for-Profit Corporation with Registered Charity status in 2021. The mandate is to help through faith:
